Compassionate Conservative

Is it my imagination, or is the administration trying to put a happy face on right now? On Monday the Pentagon released the list of detainies at Guantanamo Bay. Today, Tuesday, they announce that they plan to realease the video of American Airlines flight 77 crashing into the Pentagon.

Of couse, let us not forget that Bush gave his speech on Monday which he didn't arrange until Friday under marginaly unusual circumstances. (h/t Mikevotes)

The circumstances around how the speech was arranged notwithstanding, this speech was set up and timed. Why? So the president could force us to think about illegal immigration but promise to do nothing to effectively address the problem.

Maybe I am seeing things, but it seems like the administration is trying to come off as compasionate and fair. No one is buying it, but they are trying.

Is this the pathetic throes of an administration watching their polling numbers continue to plumb new lows, or is this an offering before an admission of guilt?

Only time will tell.

UPDATE: The video has been released, but you have to go through DOD procedures to get it. I wonder how long before they have it up at Crooks and Liars.

SECOND UPDATE: The video is up at Judicial Watch

  • No doubt Bolten is desperately trying to change the topic to something good for Bush. Unfortunattely whatever topic comes up these days, whether it's Iraq, the economy, gas, immigration or even terrorism, they don't help him much in the polls.

And that immigration speech last night is not going to hrelp him with his base.

  • He is trying to play to both sides of the aisle. He is losing his support base and the Repubes are screaming that he is costing them the next set of elections..must be hard to juggle all those demands :P

What I find interesting is the Nat. Guard is pushed to the limit in manpower and how can he send 6K soldiers to the border without undermining safety at home any further?

  • RBE,

That is what happens when you s*** in your own bed.

The immigration speech was a total joke. Gun-toting liberal did a great parody on it. Hilarious.

    Dusty,

I figure this means some troops are coming home soon, otherwise it makes no sense, as you point out.

But Immigration control can now be used as an exit strategy. "We would like to stay in Iraq, but more pressing concerns have forced us to reconcentrate our efforts at home." Or some other such non-sense.

  • I didn't watch the immigration speech. However I have never believed George W. was a member of the radical right. He's an old school preppie, just like his father. The difference between the two is that Bushie jr. is stupider, more insecure, and more grandiose. Bush jr. just used the right-wing to get elected. Now that he's a lame duck, and sees his poll numbers dropping, he's thinking: What are the right-wingers doing for me now? Nothing. So he's doing whatever he wants to do.

  • I think Elizabeth has Bush pegged. He's trying to appeal to the 72% of people who don't approve of his job, by appearing reasonable. The problem is that he's perfected his unreasonale demeanor so well, that no one will buy it.

  • Elizabeth,

I think the young Bush is also more susceptible to peer pressure. You should read the speach. Total garbage. He said just enough to make the left mad, but not enough to quell the "fence builders".

Instead of listening to anyone, like you say, he does what he wants.

    Saskboy,

I think he is trying to appeal to the 70% of people who want something done about immigration. Unfortuantely, there are two major camps (and thousands of side camps) and I don't think he managed to appeal much to either of them (maybe a few of the mini-camps).

Maybe he thought the 72% who disapprove of his job were the same who disapprove of his immigration non-policy.

Just when you think he couldn't screw it up any worse..... I wonder what other crazy ideas we are going to get over the next 990 days.

  • Oh I know Bush can screw things up more.

"Screw up more" reads as "pre-emtpive nuclear or conventional war in Iran".
