Prague Revolt of 1945
On today's date in 1945 the citizens of Prague began what would be a 5 day revolt against German occupation forces. The national radio station started broadcasting in the Czech language, 1600 barricades were set up around the city, and people took to the streets in open defiance.
For the Czechs, this day is considered the end of the war.

Soviet troops would roar up to the edge of the city, urge the city's citizens to rise up against the Germans and then wait while the Germans slaughtered the patriots willing to fight and then the Soviets would attack (finally). I can't tell you why, exactly, but I have my suspicions. It was the end of the war though, wasn't it?

It was the end of the war. It was a symbolic move. The police were encouraged to revolt and most did, but by that time, the outcome was clear to everyone.
